Another Froggie Adventure By Ron Berry
Treasure Hunt
Deep in the marshlands of the misty old bog
just past the willow on the hollowed out log
Froggie and Lanky sat planning their day
a brand new adventure about to get underway
They’re flying to Eagle Island to find treasure that they heard
was buried long ago by the dread pirate Red Bird
Froggie’s backpack is full of all kinds of supplies
with maps and shovels and snacks of crunchy dried flies.
Froggie hopped up onto Lanky and they were ready to take off
but as Lanky spread his wings, they heard a stern little cough.
They both looked down as they heard Froggie’s mom say,
“Remember, Froggie, you promised to watch your sister today.”
“Awe, Mom! Our day is all set.
Do I really have to baby-sit Froggett?” whined Froggie
“I have to go shopping and have a million chores to do.
I was really hoping I could rely on you.” said Froggie’s mom
“But what about Lanky? This will wreck his whole day.” pleaded Froggie
“That’s okay, Froggie. We can stay here and play.” said Lanky
“Thank you boys. I’ll be back in little bit.
and you can still have fun while you baby-sit.
Just keep a close eye on your little sister,
keep her out of trouble and try not to lose her.” said Froggie’s mom
Froggie hopped down and took Froggett by the hand
and said, “Don’t worry, Mom. We understand.”
As Froggie’s mom left, they all waved good bye.
Then Froggett hopped onto Lanky and said, “Me wanna fly!”
Lanky spread his wings and ran around on the ground
Froggett held on tight and made a swishing sound.
then Lanky pretended to come in for a landing
with a hop and a spin, finishing on one leg standing.
“Ta da.”, said Lanky with a wink and a grin
“That was the bestest fun! Let’s do it again.” said Froggett
“Why don’t we play a different game instead?
Let’s make believe we’re pirates and I’ll be Captain Red.” said Froggie
“That sounds like fun. I’ll be your first mate.
We can make costumes and everything. It’ll be great.” said Lanky
“What about me? What do I get to do?” asked Froggett
“You get to do all the fun stuff. You get to be the crew.” replied Froggie
“Now as your captain, my first order will be
to make a treasure map. That’ll be your job, Lanky.” said Froggie
“Aye, aye, Captain.” said Lanky as he snapped to attention.
“And I’ll make a chest to put the treasure in.” said Froggie
So Lanky started stepping and making notches in trees
and Froggie hopped to the bog to cut down some reeds.
Froggett feeling left out said, “Don’t you have an order for me?”
Froggie stopped and thought for a moment and said, “ Hmm. Let’s see.”
“Lanky’s making the map and I’m making the chest.
You get to do the job that I think is best.”
Your order is to go and find us some treasure.
Some really cool stuff. You can do that I’m sure.”
“Me, me, Captain.” Froggett said as she gave Froggie a salute.
“Me get the treasure. Me get lot’s of good loot.”
As Froggett hopped off, Froggie turned to Lanky with a glare
and said, “That should get her out of our hair.”
“Do you think it’s a good idea sending her off on her own?
She could get into trouble out there all alone.” asked Lanky
“Don’t worry so much, Lanky. She’ll be just fine.
and we can get our work done in the meantime.” said Froggie
“Now carry out your orders if you want to be my first mate
or else walking the plank will be your next fate.” said Froggie
“Aye, Captain.” said Lanky counting his strides as he was leaving
and Froggie cut some reeds to start his treasure chest weaving.
Before long they both finished and were showing off what they had done.
They sang pirate songs and had sword fights. They were having loads of fun.
Then Lanky looked at Froggie like something was wrong.
“I think you’re sister’s been gone way too long.” said Lanky
“She’s probably just goofing off and lost track of time.
I’ll call her and she’ll come home. It will all be just fine.” said Froggie
So Froggie called out but Froggett didn’t come.
So he called out even louder and then Lanky called some.
Froggie got scared and said, “Lanky, we have to find her.”
“I knew you shouldn’t have sent her off to find treasure.” said Lanky
“I made a big mistake. I know that now
but we still have to find my sister somehow.” said Froggie
“Then hop on my back and we’ll search from the air.
We won’t stop until we’ve looked everywhere.” said Lanky
“Thank you, Lanky. I knew I could rely on you.
You’re my first mate and my best friend too.” said Froggie
Together they searched high and low.
They looked wherever they thought Froggett might go.
They asked everyone they saw if she had been there.
But no one had seen her. She had disappeared into thin air.
From up in the sky, Froggie saw his mom hopping.
She had finished her chores and done all her shopping.
She was on her way home so they headed there too.
Froggie said a prayer. He didn’t know what else to do.
“God, this is Froggie and I was supposed to watch my sister
but I played pirates instead and now I think I’ve lost her.
I know I was wrong and I don’t know what else to say
but please, God, please let her be okay.” prayed Froggie
Froggie and Lanky got home and called for Froggett once more
just as Froggie’s mom arrived and hopped up to the door.
Froggie was almost in tears and about to give his mom a big hug
when he heard a little yawn and felt a slight tug.
It was Froggett. She was rubbing her eyes and took Froggie by the hand
“Me got lot’s of treasure for you to bury in the sand.” said Froggett as she gave Froggie a box.
She had gotten tired hunting treasure and thought it better instead
to take a nice little nap in her own cozy bed.
“Oh no you don’t. I’m afraid that treasure’s not for burying.
That’s mommy’s jewelry. Like the necklace I’m wearing.” said Froggie’s Mom as she took the box.
“Thank you, Froggie for watching your little sister.
You’ve helped me a lot. You’re a great baby-sitter.”
“Now, all you kids, run out and play
while I go inside and put all these groceries away.”
So Froggie, Lanky and Froggett went and played pirates again
They had a map and a chest but no treasure to put in.
“Me get some treasure.” Froggett said as she started to hop away.
“Wait a minute, Froggett. There’s something I want to say.” said Froggie.
“Today is a day I will never forget.
I was so scared that I lost you, Froggett.
As your big brother I make a promise that’s true
I will never let anything bad ever happen to you.” said Froggie
“Okee doke. Me wanna fly now.” interrupted Froggett as she hopped onto Lanky
“Just a minute. Let me finish my vow.” said Froggie
“I think she gets the idea, Froggie. How about we go for a glide?” said Lanky
“Okay, but this is mutiny you know for taking her side.” said Froggie
So Froggie and Froggett held on tight to Lanky’s feathers
and they flew over the bog, the three of them together.
And from that day on Froggie was true to his vow
though Froggett seemed determined to make him break it somehow.
